Kollagen, Supplements und Langlebigkeit – Was wirklich sinnvoll ist und was nicht
Shownotes

00:00:00: Collagen, the reason why it is so important.
00:00:03: It's that its main protein of our body makes up thirty percent of our bodies which is quite alarming.
00:00:10: we start losing it early and not just in skin.
00:00:13: a lot people associate with skin health.
00:00:15: they should at seventy-five percent but also seventy or eighty percent.
00:00:21: joints tendons cut off.
00:00:23: this is all collagen blood vessels intestinal lining It's our eyeballs, it is our teeth.
00:00:32: It's ninety percent of our bone organic matrix.
00:00:35: so really the glue that holds out body together.
00:00:47: Hello
00:00:47: and herzlich willkommen beim Healthy High Performance

00:01:00: Hier geht es um eine neue
00:01:02: Art von Erfolg
00:01:03: und Leben Ambitioniert und gesund No hassle, no burnout.
00:01:09: With a lot of fulfillment!

00:01:14: know-how
00:01:15: with you, show real insights from business everyday life... ...and share conversations with inspiring people.
00:01:21: For
00:01:22: healthy high performance
00:01:23: for people who want to move big without losing themselves.
00:01:26: Because here is one credo.
00:01:29: We create
00:01:30: fast but live slow.
00:01:32: Welcome and let's start the episode.
00:01:52: How nice
00:01:52: that you have switched on to today's podcast episode.
00:01:55: I hope it goes well for you, and I hope you're in good energy!
00:02:00: And now we've got a topic for you which many people have wished about... ...and which many other people are busy with out
00:02:06: there.
00:02:07: If
00:02:07: anyone knows my work, they know that when it comes to supplements, powder, additives
00:02:12: etc.,
00:02:12: I'm back here.
00:02:14: For me personally, credo is more than enough.
00:02:18: Because for me, health is always based on a good foundation of nutrition, lifestyle and inner balance.
00:02:25: Mental health and movement or strength training.
00:02:29: At the same time I look at all topics out there with great curiosity.
00:02:35: Try many things yourself but also for you!
00:02:36: And especially topics that will be discussed very controversially...
00:02:42: ...I want
00:02:43: to understand
00:02:45: something better.
00:02:46: And a topic that is really very controversial and discussed, where we find many different opinions out there again.
00:02:54: Is the subject of collagen?
00:02:56: Many of you have wanted me to say something about it because here too We also have opinion.
00:03:01: pictures from ... That doesn't bring anything at all!
00:03:03: Yes these are quasi slaughterhouses which we consume up until then.
00:03:08: Hey this isn´t just for skin health but for the whole body A completely important topic.
00:03:14: of course we find a lot.
00:03:17: And here, as always, there is uncertainty, half-knowledge and marketing but maybe also very close to each other on the basis of research and accordingly it was important
00:03:27: for me this
00:03:29: topic because you would like to hear about that in this podcast too.
00:03:31: give room To do so.
00:03:34: I invited an exciting interview.
00:03:35: guest.
00:03:37: Dr Vanessa Craig
00:03:38: is a nutrition scientist and founder of the brand FORMETTER has been working for decades, very scientifically and research on different topics.
00:03:50: How are we going to be healthy?
00:03:52: She has long been in cancer research and now she's been dealing with the subject of collagen and collagen peptide
00:03:59: for
00:04:00: many years .
00:04:00: That means that it really goes deep here and looks at what can this really bring about for our body?
00:04:08: , yes, for a change or something just not.
00:04:10: And accordingly, we basically go into this episode.
00:04:31: Was neben der Ernährungen weitere wichtige Komponenten sind für unsere Gesundheit aus der Perspektive des Well-Aging but still can make sense to eventually understand Collagen as a supplement for themselves.
00:04:47: A very important clue at this point, the interview is in English because Vanessa comes from Australia.
00:04:54: she lives in Switzerland and accordingly we have of course introduced that interview into her mother tongue.
00:05:00: The other thing which is quite important to me is Vanessa is also founder here by Formetta
00:05:07: i.e.,
00:05:07: by one brand who manufactures Collagen products.
00:05:10: She looks at the topic in a completely different way and also says clearly when we should not take any collage.
00:05:16: But what's important to me is that this episode is independent, it was not created as part of a paid cooperation.
00:05:23: but I'm looking for my interview
00:05:25: guests.
00:05:25: so if I see exciting aspects then not because there will be a co-operation
00:05:31: in the background.
00:05:32: In this
00:05:32: sense I wish you lots of joy with this interview many exciting insights into collagen and longevity.
00:05:39: And
00:05:40: now let us start!
00:05:45: Vanessa, it's such
00:05:46: a pleasure to have you here on the podcast today.
00:05:48: So very warm welcome to you!
00:05:50: I'm already very excited to hear all of our different topics we will touch upon but first of all – Welcome!
00:05:57: Thank-you so much and it is my pleasure to meet you for having me.
00:06:02: Please give your listeners an introduction about who are you?
00:06:06: And what is your big passion when it comes health?
00:06:12: So I am a trained biomedical researcher, so that is my trade.
00:06:19: I came with this focus to cure cancer.
00:06:34: That was always my mission as a student, and so I thoroughly enjoyed this work.
00:06:40: I was able to patent two therapies published very well in this field And still today find it's fascinating field.
00:06:48: science of cancer and trying to treat It.
00:06:51: With time and with my own aging health experiences i Was gradually becoming more interested In the ageing process also what it has in common with cancer.
00:07:04: And this idea of preventing chronic disease, how can we actually do this from a nutrition and lifestyle perspective?
00:07:13: This was very gradual.
00:07:15: I did my postdocs in the field of epigenetics again in the context of cancer-I studied nutrition at Stanford... I started leading a Nutrition Longevity Program at River Medical Campus.
00:07:30: In the last ten years, I really focused on collagen.
00:07:47: But with my own, like I said, my own aging.
00:08:02: I had two kids.
00:08:03: I really experienced premature ageing and reached my thirties already ridden with chronic diseases and inflammation and things that I wanted to improve on... ...I was also looking for my own solutions And it's very disenchanted when i saw That could not get a collagen supplement which is based upon the clinical research And then I really took it into my own hands and was developing my own collagen products for myself.
00:08:30: So this really was a selfish initiative, but then sharing with clients as well who were helping them in consulting that to say this isn't just about collagen.
00:08:42: the supplement industry in general needs a lot of help.
00:08:45: so i focused on collagen and slowly am also looking at other areas too.
00:08:50: improve A
00:08:57: big journey in a nutshell.
00:08:59: I love this, thank you for sharing!
00:09:01: You said the first part of your journey was cancer research and then you mentioned... ...a few common things when it comes to cancer aren't also aging.
00:09:12: What are these common things?
00:09:13: And what can we as listeners and people who're interested in staying healthy Can take away from our expertise in Cancer Science if we call like that for our own healthy aging.
00:09:27: Well, a lot of the things that are causing cancer also causing premature ageing right?
00:09:32: There's a lot overlap and if you look at the hallmarks of cancer or these biological processes which cause cancer or cause ageing they're overlapping essentially looking like chronic disease in itself.
00:09:48: so as I said my PhD in Chronic Implementation chronic inflammation leads, can lead to cancer.
00:09:54: I was studying cancers called by chronic inflammation which is preventable and then chronic inflammation's a main driver of aging as
00:10:02: well.".
00:10:03: And when you're trying to...I don't like saying reverse the ageing process let say slow down the age in process or prevent cancer.
00:10:12: your turning on pathways anti-cancer pathways but they're also the anti aging pathway.
00:10:18: so there's a lot of overlap in the biological processes involved in these two areas.
00:10:25: Can you give us a few examples because I think that is very interesting to all of us right?
00:10:29: What can, what do this path ways look like?
00:10:33: and what can i as busy mom off too running her business having a full life?
00:10:38: what kind are doing my daily live to kinda prevent the ageing?
00:10:44: or You know, this pathway is a bit more.
00:10:46: Oh my god there's so much.
00:10:47: it's actually A LOT you can do!
00:10:51: That is why I always like to think yes aging is inevitable but how your age is under your control because There IS SO MUCH YOU CAN DO TO SLOW IT DOWN.
00:11:01: To be honest we already know So many of these things.
00:11:05: that's what i feel Like.
00:11:06: im really just saying common sense.
00:11:08: We KNOW HOW MUCH STRESS Can reduce Yeah, chronic disease.
00:11:13: How much it can reduce or de-accelerate aging?
00:11:16: Stress is a huge one of course having better sleep movement and then nutrition plays big role.
00:11:23: I'm an advocate for anti inflammatory diet but really its very common sense in terms.
00:11:34: we know that.
00:11:40: excess sugar Again, I don't even like to use the word highly processed.
00:11:46: A lot of processed foods are good for us as well but it's really being careful about what we put in our body and making sure that getting a lot of nutrient dense food is in your body.
00:11:57: so therefore yeah...I think my answer is bit boring!
00:12:02: We already know this there.
00:12:04: no miracle
00:12:05: pill
00:12:06: then ever will be because you can out supplement A poor diet, you can't out-supplement too much stress.
00:12:14: There's just no quick fix.
00:12:16: You need to take care of all these pills.
00:12:17: Yeah
00:12:19: And that's the interesting point right which is kind of connecting toward what you said before.
00:12:23: it's like On one hand we cannot oversimplify this stuff.
00:12:28: on other hand The foundation for colored health quality longevity color whatever the Foundation For our life Is actually Pretty simple when we look at what you just said, right?
00:12:41: We how eat.
00:12:42: How do move?
00:12:43: How are we sleep?
00:12:44: so where do have the feeling things get oversimplified and where did they get too complicated?
00:12:52: I think it can get to complicated for a fact mean i actually talk about cellular health about really all of this supplements we make out for matters.
00:13:05: um...I should mention that I make supplements.
00:13:08: they're really focused on cellular health, but what does that even mean?
00:13:11: And when you have a supplement which is focused on mitochondrial health sometimes people like well that's enough.
00:13:17: You've got to take care of your mitochondria.
00:13:20: this one compounder is going do the work and it... That for me is oversimplified.
00:13:24: Like I said there are twelve biological processes which are governing the aging pathway.
00:13:29: When we think about DNA repair Cellular senescence There's lot different things that need focus And a lot of people don't have great understanding their cellular health to actually know what may need more help than others.
00:13:45: So I think it's grossly oversimplified by a lot products selling you solutions via one pathway, we see that in the skincare industry as well not just supplement industry.
00:13:56: so they need be careful about where are investing your money?
00:14:01: Yeah!
00:14:04: It's very complicated and we can make it very complicated.
00:14:08: And on the other hand, for let say marketing purpose at sometimes broken down in a very simple way which is not grasping the whole picture.
00:14:17: Is that correct?
00:14:19: So my mission... ...is to of course not oversimplify health and selling people a solution This magic bullet.
00:14:29: I want do it very responsibly In that this can help you.
00:14:33: But you need to also take care of a lot about other aspects of health, which are going to help.
00:14:40: Do you know what I mean?
00:14:45: It's a problem when you see your supplement being sold that it can reverse the aging process but if you're under chronic stress and not sleeping... That is gross oversimplification!
00:15:02: After having kids being heavily sleep deprived, it didn't matter what I ate.
00:15:10: It was prematurely aging like if your sleep is not well then you don't really care about doing in all fronts.
00:15:15: there's no supplement that can help here.
00:15:19: Did i answer a question?
00:15:20: Yes You did.
00:15:21: Thankyou so much for that.
00:15:23: No its perfect.
00:15:25: So when we look at this What made you go In the direction where you said okay I want to create my own supplement because, you know when i think about supplements it feels like there are gazillion supplements out there.
00:15:38: It feels like an angle.
00:15:40: so im always as a business owner very interested what drives us see something.
00:15:46: hey here should jump in and create something that is better or helping more.
00:15:51: What would be your personal way behind?
00:15:54: Look!
00:15:55: to find what works.
00:15:59: I think as a researcher who's spent so many years in the lab trying to understand, What works and can work an experimenting?
00:16:09: And you're really a truth seeker!
00:16:13: For me i am such a skeptic when it comes nutrition When It Comes To Anything In This Field.
00:16:29: because I didn't plan on leaving my then research career to really challenge that.
00:16:36: Because it's a poorly regulated industry, the supplement industries not like the farm industry.
00:16:43: they get away with a lot.
00:16:46: It is so highly controlled... The marketing is out of control and this an interesting experience.
00:16:59: educate people alongside of brands where the marketing speak is, it's very misleading and what we have now are highly confused.
00:17:08: People who throw their hands up in the air would rather not take anything And I completely understand that.
00:17:15: I don't think supplements for everyone.
00:17:17: i think you do need to be quite experimental and nature because It's Not a given.
00:17:25: I mean That will work.
00:17:29: you're often very misled.
00:17:30: I think it's, and that comes down to like i said the marketing-the words your allowed use.
00:17:35: You are allowed say something is natural when its not.
00:17:39: No one can help on that?
00:17:40: Your allow to say some things clinical clinically test but its not.
00:17:44: It is insane what companies get away with And thats a real pity.
00:17:49: So I guess Its just my personal mission of wanting provide A space for people have products I can stand behind and that they can trust.
00:18:02: So were these things you discovered along the way while creating your own brand or was it something you are fully aware of, how this industry works?
00:18:12: And all those thing just said... You're going in with a drive to change them.
00:18:18: For sure like i said.. Okay get me a collagen supplement!
00:18:26: Because our collagen starts to decline after age twenty five, so you reach your thirties and then you start getting wrinkles.
00:18:31: You start getting aches in pains a hangover takes more than a day and things like that year not as resilient as it used to be.
00:18:40: And therefore I was very motivated.
00:18:42: bend take supplements wasn't before that.
00:18:44: i think i would still As a student, very much still riding on the waves of youth where you're thinking it's going to last forever even though I'm assigned.
00:18:59: It's the irony that doctors smoking outside the hospital right?
00:19:02: Even if we know its bad for us... You are doing things like this.
00:19:06: so i was more motivated later and then when really started looking at these supplements and curating my own supplement routine to fill the gaps based on blood work and also my symptoms that I was really not happy with what i could find.
00:19:27: And then, I was having to source things from so far away... Things like that!
00:19:31: That's where it took me on a journey.
00:19:33: Then keeping on uncovering these untruths.
00:19:36: So yeah.. Really peeling back the curtain as time went on being pretty appalled by.
00:19:47: We have a lot of listeners who are very interested in supplements and probably take some but what I always experience as we said before it's the big jungle.
00:19:54: It is
00:19:55: very overwhelming, And often things get simplified like if you're not taking this You will be healthy or you
00:20:05: won't
00:20:07: have fear mongering.
00:20:08: That's perfect word for that.
00:20:10: So from your expertise When i'm sitting here and say Vanessa I want to take something.
00:20:17: I should take supplements, i don't know where to start.
00:20:22: What are you doing with your clients?
00:20:23: To educate them and also empower them... ...to know what to look for?
00:20:29: First it's based on your health goal.
00:20:30: It has to be individualized.
00:20:32: Not once someone's supplement routine shouldn't like some looks like someone else.
00:20:37: We don't eat exactly the same as everyone.
00:20:39: Its gonna different.
00:20:40: so You really do need to dig in and understand what they want to feel about it.
00:20:45: Is that their sleep?
00:20:46: Is there energy, is how they are...is at the skin?
00:20:50: There are some common goals.
00:20:51: obviously everyone wants glowing skin.
00:20:53: I mean this something.
00:20:55: who doesn't want that!
00:20:57: And so you know in a reason why i focused on collagen because this is something every one should take.
00:21:03: This not like many other supplements where its very individual You're deficient to your blood saying you really need to up this, not absorbing it as well from your food.
00:21:15: Of course there are quite a few which generally most people should take.
00:21:20: Magnesium is usually good for everyone in Amiga's room but with collagen after the age of twenty-five like I said It is depleting and The reason why i felt very safe And responsible creating a formulation Is because its no longer on our diet.
00:21:38: Supplements are great, but food is always first.
00:21:41: I'm sure you agree with that.
00:21:43: Food is number
00:21:43: one and it's
00:21:45: going to be the best thing.
00:21:46: You've got all your nutrients wrapped up in the food matrix.
00:21:48: That's how we should be having our nutrition But with collagen It's no longer in our diet And so that's why having a collagen supplement Is the next best thing.
00:22:00: if you were going To make bone broth every day high quality bone broth everyday than i'd say hey let's then okay Even though we have got a study showing that our peptides are even better than bone broth, but still.
00:22:12: Bone broth is amazing and before I made this supplement i was making bone broth And I tell you... That was huge laborious problem like process You know?
00:22:22: You're making it overnight.
00:22:23: It's big thing Getting these bones in everything and chicken feet all of those things to make it Not something from the supermarket so easy.
00:22:35: So therefore these things can make it less complicated and more convenient.
00:22:41: So obviously I'm biased because i am very much into college in science, but I really think everyone can benefit so much from improving their collagen stores.
00:22:52: It's the more collagen you have ,the healthier you will be
00:22:55: Okay!
00:22:56: So back to the question first of all what is my health goal?
00:22:59: This is...I should be aware of What Am I Aiming For?
00:23:02: As You Said We have to kind of see.
00:23:05: do I have a deficiency somewhere where we are more like in the therapy part, right?
00:23:12: Like iron is missing.
00:23:13: How can i supplement that?
00:23:14: and The other party were talking about us what our things In general they decline over time And when all Can benefit from if we take it whether we Have a deficiency or not because this Is kinda A different perspective.
00:23:30: you put on it And this is something we should probably do with all supplements, whether it's collagen or not.
00:23:36: Really see... Is it like a deficiency?
00:23:38: Do I need that?
00:23:39: What are my goals and what is beneficial in general for
00:23:42: me?".
00:23:43: This little guideline can give people...?
00:23:46: Yeah you said much better than actually.
00:23:47: so thanks!
00:23:48: You said the perfect of just eye-brain sometimes trying
00:23:53: to put it again.
00:23:55: That's exactly what I wanted.
00:23:58: So you said before collagen is the big part.
00:24:01: You were focusing on and which she found yourself And I love this story, you know
00:24:07: Really cooking these bone broth?
00:24:08: I mean
00:24:09: i can remember that from postpartum That my Ayurvedic therapist was always bringing The bone broth and I loved it.
00:24:18: But I was always imagining oh my god doing that myself every day.
00:24:22: It's just a lot of work.
00:24:24: so Give us a little bit the science around collagen.
00:24:27: You already dropped very great insights, you know?
00:24:31: What it's doing for us and glowing skin is amazing but I'm pretty sure there are so much more behind collagen than your wonderful skin that i am seeing in front of me!
00:24:41: That was really nice of you.
00:24:43: Yes, I mean collagen... The reason why this is important?
00:24:46: because it makes up about thirty percent of our body which It's quite alarming that we start losing it so early.
00:24:56: And, its not just in the skin.
00:24:57: a lot of people associate with skin health and they should at seventy five percent our skin but also seventy or eighty percent out joints tendons cut up.
00:25:07: this is all collagen.
00:25:09: Its blood vessels its intestine lining its eyeballs its teeth its ninety percent bone organic matrix really the glue that holds our body together.
00:25:23: And like I said, it's quite alarming after the age of twenty-five we start losing at where peak... We have peak collagen around twenty five not surprising to anyone just like we have peak bone density around twenty-fifth thirty and then the aging process starts.
00:25:38: We start losing collagen and this is what leads to these negative signs of aging that we are all trying to avoid such as the wrinkles And this is down to a lot of the time, collagen inflammation these kinds of things.
00:25:56: Yeah so The best thing and that reason is two-fold.
00:26:00: So your collagen producing cells.
00:26:03: They have different names depending on with area in body.
00:26:07: Let's just call them collagen producing cell.
00:26:09: they are Producing less collagen as we age.
00:26:12: their metabolism is slowing.
00:26:14: That's not normal process.
00:26:16: But were also degrading collagen faster than when making it And that's why we are losing one to one point five percent of collagen per year.
00:26:25: around menopause, it really drops off a cliff.
00:26:27: That's when you see an even faster rate.
00:26:29: so... You can see its also dependent on hormones there too.
00:26:34: So yes, thats' why you really need a strategy To remotely stimulate these collagen producing cells to increase their metabolism.
00:26:42: which comes from the diet?
00:26:44: it would come from collagen rich foods, comes from collagen peptides that you get from collagen-rich foods.
00:26:50: But you also want to reduce the degradation of collagen and you can do by providing a collagen friendly environment reducing chronic inflammation, providing your body with certain antioxidants which inhibit these enzymes which break down colon.
00:27:07: We know how to do this in clinical studies but we have think about things outside nutrition.
00:27:15: Obviously, reducing sugar is a big one.
00:27:17: This can really break down collagen faster by glycating the proteins but also we know that UV.
00:27:25: obviously this breaks down collagen.
00:27:28: So why dermatologists bang on about sunscreen so much?
00:27:32: But also movement.
00:27:34: lack of movement can increase the risk of collagen breakdown.
00:27:39: stress I could sleep again.
00:27:40: all these pillars we talked about.
00:27:42: That's why you need to take that into account as well.
00:27:45: Okay,
00:27:46: thank you for sharing that.
00:27:47: so i have two questions.
00:27:48: one is when collagen going down We were talking about skin and wrinkles but he was also saying joint aches.
00:27:55: So what more internal symptoms?
00:27:58: We should be aware of
00:27:59: Could
00:28:00: come from The lack of collagen which we as women might not think about.
00:28:08: look To be honest, most people notice the beauty effects.
00:28:14: So what I like to also think about is you know the disease scurvy?
00:28:17: This is a lack of vitamin C and when you have this your collagen suffers.
00:28:25: And so what people notices?
00:28:26: their hairs falling out Their nails fall out They teeth falls out All these things...and it's because they're the lack of collagen.
00:28:36: What other people notice is the gut issues.
00:28:40: So we do work with doctors who are gut specialists to really like our collagen supplement and they find that it helps improve gut health, intestinal lining is made up of collagen so helping your gut by reinforcing collagen production.
00:29:01: Unfortunately, there's no clinical studies on the gut health though.
00:29:04: So we really only work from anecdotal evidence there.
00:29:08: We've also worked with gynecologists as well and find that it helps conditions like endometriosis cycle regulation which is very interesting to me.
00:29:20: I wish you could investigate further because this shows how far reaching effects of collagen are in your body.
00:29:27: It not just about skin so its always interesting for people to report back what they're feeling, but another major one is pain.
00:29:36: So body pain whether it's back pain or knee pain and arthritis.
00:29:41: so we do clinical studies in these areas.
00:29:44: That's a big one because this really helps with your mobility.
00:29:48: therefore that why I connect collagen along longevity.
00:29:54: if you are improving mobility which our peptides have also been proven to do in clinical trials, and post-menopausal women with low bone density.
00:30:06: You really are increasing your lifespan because there is studies showing that if you have a break or fracture on your bones the risk of dying for six months increased by forty percent.
00:30:16: so things like osteoporosis we accept as quite normal at age are preventable more serious.
00:30:29: And yeah, I think it's important to build awareness around that.
00:30:33: I
00:30:34: think its super-important because as we said before right?
00:30:37: We're all here for the glowy skin!
00:30:38: I love that but i'm hearing how central is can be for female health, for gut health or joint health and really thinking into How important this is our longevity also for life quality.
00:30:54: This personally for me puts it in a totally other arena when it comes to our health, right?
00:31:03: That we can also look into that.
00:31:05: So I'm curious to see how the studies evolved around especially female health because there's big potential for this.
00:31:16: I agree!
00:31:17: A disease like osteoporosis is more common among women.
00:31:21: One and three women in Switzerland... one in five men actually, so it is still common.
00:31:27: But it's a silent epidemic.
00:31:29: and what's really alarming that more young women are getting osteopoiesis which the precursor to osteopoeia... Sorry!
00:31:40: Is the precursors of osteoporosis?
00:31:43: Which just shouldn't be happening.
00:31:45: I mean this entirely preventable but shows you the influence nutrition is having, I mean maybe it'll be better because strength training is really having a moment now.
00:31:56: Yeah hoping that helps but i really think collagen is the missing piece of bone health there.
00:32:01: so we're really trying to...I mean its a struggle to make bones sexy.
00:32:05: people don't want to think about bones unless they do with skin.
00:32:11: yeah well certainly on a mission to try and spread the word to doctors that collagen should not be forgotten.
00:32:17: It's as important as calcium and vitamin D.
00:32:21: Fair point.
00:32:22: What is actually collagen?
00:32:23: rich food?
00:32:24: I mean, we talked about the bone broth before.
00:32:26: are there any other good sources We can focus on in our daily nutrition?
00:32:34: Good question Because it's a bit of a disappointing answer because like i said these foods aren't really prevalent In out diet anymore.
00:32:42: Collagen comes from animals.
00:32:45: plants do not make collagen.
00:32:46: so As much as it may be seen on Instagram that there's a vegan collagen, this is not collagen.
00:32:53: It's you know in quotation marks collagen.
00:32:56: So what has to come from animals and not just any part of the animal.
00:33:00: so What we're normally eating?
00:33:02: From the animal Is the chicken breast or the beef fillet Or You Know The very small Part Of The Animal.
00:33:09: But Where The Collagen Lies Is In What Is Often Discarded And That'S In The Skin That's in the bones, that's in gelatinous cuts of meat.
00:33:19: So bone marrow is kind of trendy.
00:33:22: so it was bone broth.
00:33:23: but people are not having this every day and we're not eating animal nose to tail which has a reason why should be doing that.
00:33:32: because were missing out on all these other nutrients in animal and just sticking with muscle meet also highly nutritious.
00:33:43: Yeah, I really wish that we were eating the whole animal.
00:33:46: So yeah have all of benefits because it's even comes down to amino acid profiles are so different from the different parts in animals?
00:33:53: Yeah!
00:33:56: The critique i always hear when it come to collagen is that Different people and health industry say hey look this like an animal byproduct
00:34:07: a waste
00:34:08: product producing meat and it's doing nothing to you.
00:34:14: So I see your talking about with so much passion but also with so many background in science, Can you give us a few facts and figures why we shouldn't think in that way or were eating just, you know by product.
00:34:29: And it's not doing anything.
00:34:31: to ask what are the studies really showing?
00:34:33: So interesting
00:34:34: so I didn't even know people had that perception.
00:34:36: i thought People will more like That's gross Like they don't want to Think about Eating like The skin of an animal.
00:34:40: Also point Maybe But yeah It is A real pity I think Is getting More Accepted.
00:34:48: this detail Eating bio-hackers are really eating a lot of liver these days which is great because I mean, liver for example.
00:34:58: it's the most nutrient dense part of the animal.
00:35:01: One off
00:35:02: we should definitely be eating more of this organ meats to the point that people even buying supplements with capsules or organs right?
00:35:10: Because its so not used to eating and i think you actually need grow up.
00:35:14: eating otherwise can't really be distasteful.
00:35:20: I know a lot of people who can't handle eating kidney and liver in these things, which offer really great nutrients.
00:35:27: And when we have this overconsumption of muscle meat... We're actually having a really high intake of methionine!
00:35:35: This is what leads to these opinions that animal meat cannot be good for us because it stimulates... Maybe i'm going too sciencey but it stimulats mTOR- which you switch on these proaging pathways.
00:35:49: But it's really not the case.
00:35:50: We just need to eat more balanced, we just have a more balanced meat intake for sure and make sure that you're also eating book oil in these slow cooked meats as well which will give you different nutrient profile.
00:36:04: In the end, we should always be eating as diverse possible.
00:36:08: I think You for Sure would be huge fan of their eating thirty plants per week And trying to eat as diverse as possible.
00:36:15: But it should also be like that with the animal foods we take in as well.
00:36:20: Not just eating a chicken breast over and over,
00:36:23: yeah
00:36:24: eat other parts too.
00:36:26: Eat the other part aswell!
00:36:28: They say when they come to college.
00:36:30: this critique of waste products is not true because you have the science which clearly shows us need an external source for collagen.
00:36:42: really fueling.
00:36:44: Look, it gets tricky because why are we not eating them?
00:36:48: Like you said.
00:36:49: It's not just cause they're gross...it is being told that their more empty nutritionally.
00:36:55: of course there not but then it get complicated.
00:36:57: okay Why did start not eat the skin?
00:37:00: Is this fat content?
00:37:01: people were scared about animal fats too much fat.
00:37:04: and look I can't argue against that!
00:37:06: Um..It probably better to have a collagen peptide supplement than really eating animal skin every day and then also having a little bit of this animal fat.
00:37:16: I can't argue against that, so
00:37:18: get that.
00:37:18: yeah
00:37:19: it is tricky.
00:37:21: It is tricky And i think we all have to find our way right.
00:37:23: because This brings me To the next point.
00:37:25: there are probably A lot Of listeners who say well?
00:37:28: Im vegetarian im vegan But you're talking about animal Skin!
00:37:33: I will not eat That and I Also don't want Have a supplement Which contains Animal Things.
00:37:39: So do we have any alternatives for that or not at all?
00:37:45: In terms
00:37:46: of
00:37:46: a vegan collagen alternative, I simply don't believe you should be buying what is called a Vegan Collagen.
00:37:54: These are amino acids which are overpriced and they don't contain peptides.
00:38:01: The peptides happen to come from collagen and the peptides are signaling molecules.
00:38:05: so when it's made up of peptides and those peptide are made-up of amino acids.
00:38:11: So that is just how you can visualize it, the amino acid to building blocks at the peptides, the peptide.
00:38:16: so there could be a building block for the protein.
00:38:18: but the peptids are essentially in themselves signaling molecules.
00:38:22: they're functional... And this what stimulates the collagen producing cells.
00:38:27: The amino acids other building blocks like I said these two problems with aging our collagen producing cell getting lazy, their metabolism have slowed.
00:38:39: They're not making as much collagen and we're breaking it down faster.
00:38:43: the amino acids aren't going to increase the metabolism so you're not actually going to produce much more collagen.
00:38:49: You just providing your cells with The substrate to make it.
00:38:54: So that is why I'm NOT an advocate of vegan collagen.
00:39:00: Of course amino acids are great And vitamin C in all these things That are involved In the collagen producing Process.
00:39:06: so it's not a bad thing, but you're not going to get the same effect that we see with collagen peptides which can be quite powerful because peptides are Powerful.
00:39:16: We see that even Medicines or Zempik for example.
00:39:20: this is a peptide.
00:39:21: peptides our signaling molecules.
00:39:23: They're much more active than amino acids.
00:39:27: Yeah, I spent years formulating a vegan product which we do offer now, but it's not a collagen.
00:39:37: These are compounds that target the hallmarks of aging and I think focusing on cellular health is much better alternative than investing in a vegan collagen.
00:39:54: So when i'm sitting here I just turned forty and hear this, oh my god.
00:39:58: when i'm twenty-five the collagen starts to decline.
00:40:01: Is it too late to start later with collagen than twenty five?
00:40:07: Well first of all you look great so thank you.
00:40:09: whatever your doing works!
00:40:11: I wouldn't be too worried.
00:40:12: You have beautiful skin And its going which for me because skin is really a reflection of internal health always.
00:40:20: No It's not too late...it never too early..you know it is never too late.
00:40:25: And the reason why I can stand behind that is because collagen used to historically be in our diet.
00:40:31: for a reason.
00:40:33: It's still, in a lot of traditional cultures quite heavily featured and everyone eats chicken soups and the collagen-rich foods... For a reason!
00:40:45: You know we have clinical studies with eighteen year olds upto eighty showing an effect it never too late build collagen.
00:40:53: you should not stop trying.
00:40:55: It's very similar to muscle, even when you're in your old age, you always need to focus on building muscle.
00:41:01: Building?
00:41:02: I always say building is the opposite of aging.
00:41:05: Aging it's a stage of decline and so you always want to really fight
00:41:23: Always building.
00:41:24: it also gives you a little bit of Empowering right because buildings just like I can actually do something.
00:41:31: I don't have.
00:41:32: yes If you are living your body can still build Like yeah, not too late You don't give up.
00:41:37: that is what it is designed for and it just needs to keep the right nutrients.
00:41:41: And it can do.
00:41:42: it takes a bit more time But yeah never too late.
00:41:48: So you founded your company?
00:41:50: You're clearly on a very big mission.
00:41:53: I love that.
00:41:54: How, where do you see going in the future?
00:41:58: Because as I understood it collagen is a central piece.
00:42:01: Um but you also want to focus on other things.
00:42:05: and um Where's everything evolving for you?
00:42:09: look i'm i'm really selfishly creating supplements from myself.
00:42:13: That's what my
00:42:14: always say.
00:42:14: that's how the company started And it will always be that way.
00:42:17: so we're.
00:42:18: that's why We'll never be.
00:42:19: this Company were selling every Supplement under the sun.
00:42:24: Yeah, this is a very tight curation of what I know works.
00:42:28: That is really what i'm dedicated to.
00:42:30: my research Is dedicated understanding?
00:42:32: What works and then making products that work And I love every minute of it in terms Of there is still so much to do and So i'm really excited about our pipeline and what we have To offer.
00:42:47: It goes into you know, the further areas of research that I've been involved in.
00:42:53: Um...I've always been involved heavily in protein science and so yeah we'll be going leaning more towards this area and yes very excited that we can continue In different health areas as well.
00:43:07: Wow!
00:43:08: That's interesting And it's nice right?
00:43:10: Keeping
00:43:10: it very vague sorry but i'm just like There's more to come.
00:43:14: We will see it and we will observe,
00:43:17: you know?
00:43:18: Anyone who knows me knows that I carry around all these different little bags of potions and powders... And my bag looks like a drug dealer!
00:43:28: So in the end i'm really just trying to have everything in nice actual packaging that can take and essentially share with everyone because
00:43:40: Yeah, that's great.
00:43:41: I love your passion about this.
00:43:43: So beside
00:43:44: college and supplement my last question for today would be what are the things especially us as women should focus on in Aging healthy?
00:43:55: besides you know The big big big foundation we covered and collagen.
00:43:59: What other things?
00:44:00: You personally focusing on to really enjoy life And get older in a healthy way?
00:44:06: I know it's very cliched, but i think you really need to focus on how you feel and your energy in the vitality that is always going be number one.
00:44:15: If we are trying look a certain way this specific for women so we end up wasting our money time treatments make-up all of these stuff doesn't add quality.
00:44:32: In the end, I'm all about quality of your life.
00:44:35: How well you can move and feel in the end?
00:44:37: You will stay useful And you'll be able to help people and give back and i think that is really what's going on.
00:44:44: To meet a good person
00:44:46: Oh my god!
00:44:47: I love these words... I mean..I always have one last question.
00:44:50: Another podcast guest left for you without knowing you.
00:44:53: The one I had for you was just so perfectly fitting Where do you feel vital and full of joy & yourself in which life situation or, yeah.
00:45:04: In which situation basically?
00:45:07: It's always with my kids.
00:45:08: I mean... I know it is so predictable but you know more than anyone You have children.
00:45:14: being a mother Is the most amazing gift.
00:45:18: i've learned So much about myself and am so grateful to them!
00:45:22: I really feel like they are My teachers..I know that's so cliched But just can't be more true.
00:45:28: I learn something every day about them, about myself.
00:45:32: They make me want to be a better person.
00:45:34: they make you want to leave the world a better place and i think this is ultimately what fills me with a lot of joy and motivation.
00:45:43: I like that.
00:45:44: yeah thank you for sharing.
00:45:46: Vanessa.
00:45:46: before we wrap up this interview Is there anything you wanna add?
00:45:49: For our dear listeners which... Which we haven't touched upon yet but where do feel it's important?
00:45:56: everybody
00:45:57: hears this.
00:45:59: Not really.
00:46:00: To be honest, I feel like I've talked away too much and would love to hear more about what you think of the supplement industry?
00:46:08: I was banging on way too much about it!
00:46:10: Yeah because we are probably also very skeptical... ...and i'd be interested in knowing areas that you'd like to improve or how you navigate through this industry.
00:46:24: It's a good question, we definitely need big coffee date about that.
00:46:29: I know right?
00:46:30: That could be part
00:46:32: two!
00:46:32: But to wrap it up here little bit...I see you as a big jungle and for me its all about the people are empowered make their decisions.
00:46:42: i honestly don't care in end if what they take or why And what aim & goal is with that.
00:46:49: because when I say too much before fear mongering Somebody just told me I have to take this.
00:46:56: and now, like so many supplements.
00:46:59: And...I don't know why i'm taking them?
00:47:03: So for me it's about Know Why Educate Yourself Pick Supplements That Have A Good Quality Stick with Them Without Hopping You Know From One Trendy Thing To The Other And Have a Clear Goal With It Whether Its Glowy Skin Whether its More Energy.
00:47:19: Basically Im With You Everything you Said Before.
00:47:22: I'm Totally on board with that?
00:47:26: Yeah, but I think you're doing a good service to your listeners because in the end people really need someone who they can trust.
00:47:32: Because navigating through that industry... You often do need a research degree or scientist's degree and actually understand it.
00:47:41: so what are you doing is great!
00:47:43: That you're deep diving at helping people give empowering them some confidence.
00:47:49: And
00:47:52: to be fair, you say if you're familiar with research but I'm not every day as you are in clinical research.
00:47:59: So even then with the knowledge and background it's a hard topic to stay on track of everything that is happening.
